Rising Senior At Saint Francis High School
Advanced Lecturer at Stanford University
At the age of 13, I embarked on a journey of language learning with my remarkable Oustadati Thoraya Boumhedi. As a Spanish student under her tutelage, I not only gained fluency but also developed a deep admiration for her teaching methods. Throughout my high school years, I continued to receive regular lessons from Thoraya, allowing me to excel in advanced Spanish courses, including AP Spanish Language and AP Spanish Literature, where I achieved perfect scores on the AP exams with her support.
During my sophomore year, our relationship evolved beyond that of teacher and student. Thoraya became my mentor, introducing me to the beautiful language of Arabic. Inspired by this newfound passion, I seized the opportunity to apply for the prestigious National Security Language Initiative for Youth (NSLI-Y) Scholarship. Oustadati even came personally to the host family I was staying with, wanting to ensure that my host family was kind and accepting. They welcomed her with open arms and we were treated with an amazing traditional Morrocan lunch(see photos). This remarkable scholarship afforded me the chance to immerse myself in Moroccan culture for six weeks, a transformative experience that left an indelible mark on my life.
From exploring the enchanting Blue City of Chefchaouen to riding camels in the desert, every moment in Morocco deepened my appreciation for the rich and vibrant Arabic world. These incredible encounters and cultural experiences ignited a desire within me to share this newfound knowledge and fascination with others.
Upon returning from my unforgettable journey, I continued my language lessons with Oustadati Thoraya, particularly in preparation for my AP Spanish Literature class. As my senior year approached, we realized the value of our collective experiences and decided to create a website, a digital platform through which we could offer a glimpse into the wonders of the Arabic world.
The Oustadati website is a manifestation of our shared passion for language, culture, and education. We aim to provide a space where individuals who are curious and interested in Arabic culture can explore, learn, and connect. Through our personal stories, insightful articles, and practical tips, we hope to invite others to embark on their own journeys of discovery and appreciation for the Arabic world.
Join us as we open the doors to a world of vibrant traditions, linguistic beauty, and diverse cuisine. Together, let us delve into the wonders of Arabic culture and forge connections that transcend borders to achieve a closer global community.
